Welcome to the Ocee Learning Commons. We strive to serve students, teachers and parents in many ways.
I am Carolyn Hutcheson, the Media and Educational Technology Instructor here at Ocee Elementary School. A few of the major initiatives that I lead are:
Students: We offer many learning initiatives for students. Students have two Maker Spaces with one being 3-D. We offer Standards-based stories for Kindergarten, where students are read a story that reinforces the literacy activity they are working on in classrooms. First graders participate in Digital Doorways, a weekly class where they participate in a standards-based digital lesson combined with a story and book check-out. Second graders participate in Tinker Tuesday, where they come to the Learning Commons in groups and tinker. All grade levels may compete in our tic-tac-toe for literacy channenge where they complete a tic-tac-toe board by reading books. Prizes are awarded. We host an annual book fair and a Technology fair for students.
Teachers: Professional learning sessions are offered for teachers where they learn about a type of technology and how to effectively integrate it into the curriculum. Teachers are also provided with literacy resources such as books and streaming videos.
Parents: Parents are offered many learning sessions in our Learning Commons. Internet Safety has just happened and was a big success. A seminar on math strategies was also well-attended. Parents are able to check out five books in their names for take home use. The check-out time is two weeks.
